Africa related research at UiO can be divided into three main categories. Firstly, many departments and groups carry out research related to African issues. The main part of such research is either funded by the Norwegian Research Council or by the university/department itself. Secondly, the university has a number of joint projects in research and education in collaboration with African partners. This includes cooperation under the so-called NUFU scheme (a programme for research cooperation funded by the Norwegian Agency of Development Norad), and the NOMA scheme (Norad's programme for Master Studies). Thirdly, the university carries out research and research related projects on behalf of Norwegian authorities. Among such activities are the South Africa programme at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, which also carries out similar activities on the Horn of Africa.
